TARKA DAL

  1. Place the dals in a heavy pan and add the water and the turmeric
  2. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 40-45 minutes until the dal are very soft
  3. Stir in the salt, cover pan and remove from heat
  4. Briefly fry the cumin and the chillies in the oil. Add the garlic and brown lightly
  5. Pour the contents of the frying pan onto the dal. Cover for a few minutes and then serve
